- Desktop Icon (Position) Saver
- FTP Explorer (FTP client with Windows-Explorer-like GUI ); very useful when you want to access an FTP server which returns 'extended information' that MS-Internet Explorer can NOT understand ! I use it for ALL my planned FTP sessions!
- PFE 32 The Programmer's File Editor can be useful to anyone! Better than NOTEPAD for many tasks (but see TheGUN too!); has a line number toggle button.
Read my review of PFE32 here! - TheGUN (Grown Up Notepad) FINALLY! A free Windows Notepad Replacement that opens Binary files too! All other NOTEPAD replacements I've seen complain when a file isn't plain Text. Even PFE32 will truncate long lines; not to mention damage binary files if you try saving them! This program will also open files over 10 MB in size!
(Great for Win 95/98 and although NT doesn't need it to open large files, you might like to try it out anyway! Can Win NT's Notepad save Binary files? The GUN can!)

- PhysTechSoft Disk Editor This is a true Physical or Logical hard drive Editor. (Similar to Symantec's NORTON Disk Editor; except it won't display/guide you through Directory info. But it is designed for ANY x86 Operating System! Use it to examine NTFS, OS/2, even UNIX, etc. partitions; very small, run it from a floppy: comes with its own loader so it can boot itself without any OS on the floppy. It will run under DOS/Win95/98/maybe NT, but not under Windows 2000/XP, because they don't allow direct disk access. You can still use it to make changes to a drive that has those OSs on it though.)

| When was the first time you found out that Windows doesn't always keep track of where you put your Desktop icons? What did you feel like when your beautiful arrangement was turned into an ugly chessboard of icon soldiers lined up by Name or rank? Well, Icon Saver makes sure that your icons stay where you put them! ( If you use more than one screen resolution, it will store the positions for each setting.) Placing a shortcut in your StartUp folder, will make sure your icon-positions are restored every time Windows starts. Clicking on Icon Saver's System Tray icon brings up a menu which allows you to save and restore the positions at any time. This package also includes two separate 'console' programs, Save Icons and Restore Icons, so you can use it with batch files or at a Command prompt. This sleek little 'Missile Ware' as Steve calls it is the perfect replacement for Win 95 and 98's crippled(!) NOTEPAD program. To be specific, I actually like Notepad, it's the fact that it can't open files over 64kb that I hate, but The GUN can! And even though Win NT's Notepad can open large binary files, you might still want to try out The GUN. Written in Microsoft Assembler (MASM), The GUN is only 6,144 bytes and fast; 'the file IO capacity has been rewritten to both increase the maximum file size and to allow the viewing and editing of binary files. This is very useful for viewing string data in binary files.' GUN can now load files in excess of 10 MB depending on available memory. It's '...a fully enabled drag and drop application that has been optimised for speed and ease of operation. It has the full search capacity available from the operating system.' GUN has a nice little feature called 'Toggle Margin' which places an empty column at the left edge of the window which makes it much easier to view some files. It also has 'Toggle Wordwrap,' but unlike Notepad neither of these features will affect how the file is written when it is saved. (Oh, there was one little thing I wished for: I liked the blue highlighting in Notepad, but the 'Selected text' color in GUN is black. All coding for colors was removed to keep GUN very small, and even I'd agree that performance wins out over a highlight color! ) Version 2.5 has a little configuration program to make a few changes to TheGUN. | |

Not for use under Windows XP (does nothing for that OS!) There's NO default program to open any unassociated file in Win 95/98/NT/2000! | After installation, you still retain the option of using the 'Open With' window by right-clicking on an un-associated file. [UNLESS you use Win2000: the File Manager's of these systems act strange: Only the 'Open With' ---> 'Choose Program...' selection is affected, but I can live with that for the benefits gained. Usually you will use vdk open/link to assign to a hard disk image. By default vdk drive 0, so you get:

Now if you use ptedit32 you will see ONLY the first 3 disks with their associated size :

With beeblebrox if you choose e.g. (hd3) you will get some popup errors since the drive is not ready.
The best is using grubinst_gui.exe (part grub4dos-0.4.3 or later package). In its combo-box for drive,
you will see:

which is the perfect display since it told you what disks are ready.
Now if you plug an external HDD or USB key, there will a .physicaldrive6 (hd6) assigned,

grubinst_gui.exe display is execellent since it continues all physical drives emuneration:

Personally I prefer ptedit32 to beeblebrox (hard disk size identification), but you must be aware of'missing' physical disks due to vdk reservation gap.
To eliminate the gap (hd2)-(hd5) you have to issue a vdk close (or of course vdk remove).
Then you need to unplug the HDD (hd6) to free this slot, replug it (so it will be assigned (hd2)) and it
will be seen by ptedit32 and hence usable.
The above lines could be a little confused but I hope forum specialists have no problem reading it. :-)
